Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter’s opposition to renewing a contract allowing federal immigration authorities full access to city arrest records is infuriating local Tea Party activists and their allies who say the potential move could jeopardize the public safety of residents and visitors to the city.
Supporters of the contract… expressed… “Mayor Nutter’s decision to conceal illegal alien criminals from federal immigration authorities will result in the deaths of innocent Americans,” Peter Gadiel, the president of 9/11 Families for a Secure America, said in a press release. “We who have been the victims of crimes committed by illegal aliens have paid the price for such policies implemented by other politicians who are more interested in the votes of illegals and their supporters than in the safety of American citizens.”
Instead of immigration sweeps at factories and farms which used to lead to illegal workers being shipped out of the country, the administration’s new policy—government conducted audits labeled “silent raids” by employers—usually only result in the workers losing their jobs, the Times said.
This current policy is a contrast to the Bush-era work-site roundups where undocumented employees were deported en masse. It also represents the current government opinion that treating the nation’s 11 million illegal immigrants as criminals would overwhelm the system.
Raytheon Corp. has reportedly been selected to spearhead the initiative, receiving a $100M USD initial phase surveillance contract.
Internally, there’s been discord over the government’s plans to peer inside private networks. States a Raytheon email leaked to The Wall Street Journal, “The overall purpose of the [program] is our Government…feel[s] that they need to insure the Public Sector is doing all they can to secure Infrastructure critical to our National Security. Perfect Citizen is Big Brother.”
While the NSA had no official comment, unnamed U.S. officials took issue with the claim that they were playing “Big Brother”. They said the program was vital to protecting the nation and no more intrusive to privacy than traffic cams over intersections.
Ultimately it may be too early to judge the merits of “Perfect Citizen”, but as the program is fleshed out, it seems likely to provoke a lively debate about the government, privacy, and intervention in the private sector.
Thursday the Obama White House quietly took the first step in eliminating the first amendment by suspending freedom of speech and freedom of the press for the first time since Abraham Lincoln. News cameras are now required to remain over 65 feet away from anything that is a result of the Gulf Oil Spill. Immediate detainment, severe jail times and heavy fines will now be imposed in the name of “Not Hindering Cleanup”.
In the past people in Obama’s administration have made statements on the record that they will subvert the constitution and all they need to do is to have a foot in the door. Well wake up, entry has been accomplished, now the invasion and subversion of our rights begins. Communist Russia and Nazi Germany, and Red China come to mind. First the press, then speech, finally enslavement…
